Of all the cars Cowtown Mopars club has in it's fleet, Grady's 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T has brought as much notoriety as any! With Gradys' son, Hank, winning the 1996 &1997 Texas Raceway Track Championship and Grady winning the Texas Musclecar Club Challenge Points Championship this, sweetheart has made us ALL proud!
This triumphant story started on a trip to Ochalata, OK in 1983 to visit Jim Rodenbaugh to look at some 66-67 Charger parts, but as Grady & Hank found out, Jim dealt in a few other Mopar items as well. When they first laid eyes on this Coronet R/T is was love at first sight. As Grady says, "It took a few weeks to convince the boss" Gradys' wife, Linda "that we could not live without this car". By the time he got back with Jim he had already sold it. But about three weeks later, Jim called back and said the new owner had been 'terrorizing' the highways of northern Oklahoma and every cop in the country was looking for him and his old silver Dodge! Needless to say, he was ready to sell!
Grady and Hank purchased it and found out it had an exciting history. Jim bought it at a police auction and the car had been used as an undercover chase car! At that time it still had the red & blue lights under the front grill and the 440 6-pac engine! If his car could talk it could tell a few tales.
Dale Crane built the first engine they had in it. Although that rebuild could have lasted a lot longer, Grady and Hank got the racing bug and wanted to go faster so they rebuilt the engine again 7 years later. Grady says "It's been a really fun car to own and gets a lot of attention at the shows and races. I have had numerous offers, but it's part of the family now and has so many memories in the trunk that I probably never will sell. I hope every club member appreciates their cars the way I do. It's MOPAR or NO CAR for me!"
Grady, I think that tells it all. Thanks for your story and we will keep an eye on you and your R/T this year and try to root you on to another championship!
